A nutrient packed green smoothie made with banana, fresh juicy oranges and avocado. So smooth and creamy you would never guess it’s dairy-free!
Can you imagine what winter would be like without citrus?
For me it would be entirely unbearable. I view it as nature’s gift to us. The bright colors, the refreshing scents, the plethora of precious vitamin C. It’s literally like sunshine on a cloudy day. <name that tune!
I don’t normally drink a lot of smoothies in the winter because, um hello, it’s freaking cold. But an orange smoothie is one I’ll make an exception for.
Last year I showed you this Fresh Orange Creamsicle Smoothie which is still one of my favorites, but this year I’ve been all about the avocados for breakfast so I decided to add that to the mix as well.
Why have I been all about the avocados, you ask?
Well for one, they make for a bangin’ smoothie and for two, because I started eating them in place of my daily yogurt. Kind of a strange swap, I know, but I’ve been trying to slowly wean myself off of dairy and yogurt was the first thing to go.
I’ve eaten it daily since going vegetarian because it’s such a convenient way to get a good amount of protein, probiotics and vitamin B-12. However, the more research I continue to do on certified humane/pasture-raised dairy farming practices coupled with the effects that eating it has on our hormones, the more turned off I am. I haven’t given it up entirely (damn Amy’s pizza) and it might just be a phase, but who knows, it might be permanent too. I haven’t decided yet. We’ll see how it makes me feel long term!
In the meantime, I’ll be enjoying avocados that are packed with healthy fats and nutrients that help stabilize hormones. #avocadosFTW
Anyways, back to the smoothie. Between the frozen banana and orange, it has a light tropical flavor that will instantly make you feel like you’re on a Hawaiian beach. <one can only dream
The avocado and the almond milk give it a smooth and creamy texture that’s almost like a milkshake. But without the dairy because we don’t need it, obviously. ;)
Yield: 12 ounces
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Place all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
*Freezing the citrus prior to blending gives the smoothie a thicker texture. However, using them fresh gives it a stronger citrus flavor.
