Winter Vacation in Squaw Valley, California IV

In case you missed it, check out the first posts from our Squaw Valley trip here:

******************************

This was our last day in Squaw and it began with another great breakfast. They had pumpkin bread again, woo-hoo!

And German apple pancakes!

Brandon was a fan of their homemade whole wheat sour dough bread and the chocolate muffins.

On our last day, we decided to change things up a bit and check out some snow shoeing.

As we were walking up to the Nordic Center, where we rented the snowshoes from, we heard the sound of a ton of dogs barking and crying in a frenzy. As we approached the sound, we realized it was the dogs that were there for sledding. We found out that they are Alaskan Huskies and they make about 5 runs a day. You could tell they really live for running out there in the snow!

After we watched them for a while, we headed out into the wilderness paths to do some exploring with our snowshoes.

We wondered around the area for a bit and then climbed up one of the hills to explore between the trees.

I ended up plopping down on my back while Brandon went on a search for symmetric pinecones.

He found some pretty good ones!

They made an awesome and free souvenir.

Eventually, we made our way back down the hill to check out a bit more of the area before turning in our shoes.

The snow sparkled in the sun, it was so pretty!

There were really good views of the mountains from the trails.

And we got to watch the dogs sled all around on the track.

It was a nice change from being terrified having fun on the slopes.

As we were leaving, the dogs were taking a break and had a much calmer demeanor.

They were so cute!

We also passed my dream house some incredible homes on our way out…

Then our growling bellies sent us to get some lunch at Soupa back in Squaw village.

Brandon had the Jalapeno Cheddar Grilled Cheese with Cream of Asparagus Soup.

DSC07019

And I had La Fondue Grilled Cheese (gruyere and swiss with tomato) and the vegan Tomato Basil soup. I had half before remembering to take a picture. Open-mouthed smile

After we had full bellies, we went to check out some snow tubing.

We only went down twice because it wasn’t quite as thrilling as we had hoped.  It would be a great alternative if you have younger kids and want to spend some time off the slopes with them though. They charge $20 an hour per person for adults.

Tubing ate up just enough time for us to get a craving for a warm crepe!

Strawberries and Nutella…yum!

We enjoyed our crepe while watching people ski and snowboard down the mountain…

Then we had to grab the pups to give them some action in the snow!

They had a blast running around with us outside.

Once we cleaned up a bit, we decided to check out a wine bar named Uncorked.

Then we finished off the day with dinner back in the bar at our hotel.

We started with marinated olives and an edamame dip.

Then we split a salad and a broccoli cream fusilli dish for our entrée.

All of the food on our trip was really good, I was pleasantly surprised.

After one more fabulous breakfast at Plumpjack, we packed up and headed home. Everyone was exhausted and ready to be back in our own beds.

All in all, it was a great trip and we had a lot of fun!
