How many of you guys are coffee drinkers?

If I had to guess, I would say somewhere around 75%. Us non-coffee drinkers are definitely the minority, right?

I get it, a strong cup of coffee can make you feel like you could carry ten baby elephants across the Sahara Desert on your back. Who wouldn’t want that?

Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way for me. It’s so bitter that I have to dilute it with a bunch of creamer, then between the acids in the coffee and the saturated fat in the cream, my stomach turns so much that I don’t know whether to pass out or puke. I much rather save those calories for muffins, thanks!

I might not be a coffee drinker but I often enjoy a nice cup of green tea (I know, you’re shocked). I love it because the flavor is mild and calming, yet it has enough caffeine to give me a little energy boost. And the best part is that I can drink it unsweetened, without any creamer, and enjoy it just the same. Which means I get to eat more MUFFINS, mwuahaha! ;)

Ahem, so I first discovered matcha almost ten years ago, when we lived back on the east coast and were visiting a small town in Connecticut. We stopped into a cute little café and as soon as I saw that beautiful bright green milkshake on the menu, I knew I had to give it a try. Ever since then I’ve been hooked.

Of course I can’t drink milkshakes every day so instead I like to add matcha to my smoothies when I’m in the mood for something cold or make myself one of these almond milk lattes when I want something warm.

They’re super easy to make, all you have to do is whisk the matcha with the almond milk over medium-low heat until it’s dissolved and frothy, then serve.

I like to make larger batches at once then store leftovers in my beloved Ball Jars for the rest of the week. Then you just give the jar a nice shake (to make it frothy), pour it in a cup and microwave it for about one minute, until warm. Bada bing, bada BOOM.

Another thing I love about matcha is that I feel more of a calm energy that helps me focus when I drink it, rather than the jittery effect that coffee tends to have. It’s also a great source of catechins which are thought to be the most potent and beneficial of all antioxidants. Certain studies have shown that those antioxidants can help improve the clarity of your skin, boost your metabolism, and enhance your immunity.

That said, it’s important to know the source of your matcha as there are some producers that grow theirs with pesticides or process it with additives like refined sugar or milk solids.

One company that I recently discovered and love is Encha which was founded in San Francisco by Stanford graduate, Dr. Li Gong. He works directly with organic Japanese farmers to ensure that Encha is some of the purest matcha on the market.
