Let’s pretend that we’re somewhere on a beautiful tropical island, it’s hot and humid outside and we’re in need of a cool refreshing drink to relax with as we lay in our chair by the turquoise water.

After we dig our toes into the soft warm sand, we rest our heads back, close our eyes and take in a slow deep breath. Then as soon as we exhale and open our eyes, a fresh orange smoothie magically appears next to us.

Sigh…it’s fun to pretend sometimes, isn’t it?

If your reality is anything like mine then you’re probably covered up with at least two layers of fleece, freezing your hiney off in the dark and trying your best to avoid contracting whatever debilitating disease the person next to you has.

I know. The first scenario sounds so much better but the good news is that Mother Nature’s got us covered for the second. Fresh juicy oranges are flourishing this time of year and they’re full of immune boosting Vitamin C.

And when you freeze them and blend them up with vanilla almond milk into a smoothie, the result sort of tastes like a tropical island. In my mind, anyway.

Speaking of almond milk, it’s no secret that I’m a huge fan; you can find it in almost every recipe that includes milk on my blog so when Silk asked me to create something using theirs, it was a no-brainer.

It works especially well in this smoothie because there isn’t any need for added sugar. The oranges bring a natural sweetness to it that pairs wonderfully with their creamy unsweetened vanilla almond milk. Plus with 50% more calcium than dairy milk and zero cholesterol or saturated fat, you feel energized after drinking it.

As an added bonus, it also offers a hefty dose of fiber from the fresh oranges. They do give the smoothie a little bit of texture but it’s not as bad as drinking orange juice with pulp. I usually buy the kind without the pulp because I’m not exactly a fan of chewing when I’m drinking, but you don’t have to worry about that with this. Freezing them helps blend the textures so that the pulp is creamier and not overpowering. Trust me, if you like creamsicles then you are going to love this smoothie!

Ingredients:

  • 3 whole oranges, peeled and frozen
  • 1 and 1/2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Directions:

Place peeled oranges in the freezer in a plastic bag or container overnight or for at least 3-4 hours.
Allow oranges to defrost at room temperature for 15 minutes prior so that they are just soft enough to blend.

Add them to the blender along with the almond milk and process on high for 1-2 minutes, or until smooth. Serve cold and enjoy!
