Avocado Hummus Toast with Dill and Za’atar
Creamy avocado hummus toast with hemp seeds, fresh dill and za’atar seasoning is a flavorful and healthy lunch that only takes 5 minutes to make!
Finally, something GREEN!
I felt like we needed it after all of the booze, chocolate and pie around here lately. Or at least my hips needed it.
By the way, how many weeks do we have until summer? Lemme check real quick. Be right back.
Less than six! That means I need to get on more of the green recipes PRONTO.
So what do you know about avocado toast? I feel like there has been an unspoken trend with it this year. Or maybe it was spoken and I just missed it. I don’t know. But I keep seeing it everywhere and I’m like, man, I want some! I LOVE avocados.
It would definitely be one of the few foods I would have to take with me if I were stranded on an island somewhere. Actually that sounds pretty nice right about now. As long as I had avocados and Wilson, I think I’d be just fine.
Just kidding, Brandon. I’d have to have you there too. And Coco. And maybe some mango.
Anyways, if you guys haven’t jumped on the avocado toast train yet, this combination would be the perfect place to start. Using store bought hummus makes it super quick to throw together. I personally love Whole Food’s Lemon or Greek hummus- both of them go great with the fresh dill and za’atar which give it a delicious Mediterranean flavor that really takes it over the top.
In case you’re wondering what za’atar is, it’s a Middle Eastern spice comprised of dried herbs such as thyme and/or oregano, sumac, sesame seeds and salt. You can find it premade in the spice section at most grocery stores or you can make your own. Either way, it’s a great spice to have on hand as you can use it on almost anything. Grilled veggies, sauces, dips, the sky is the limit!
I also added some green onion for extra veggie power and hemp seeds for an additional boost of protein. The whole thing is so easy to make I feel guilty even writing it as a recipe but it’s just too good not to share. It’ll definitely be a repeat lunch in my house for the rest of the summer. Enjoy, friends!
Ingredients
4 slices of bread (preferably whole grain), toasted
5 ounces hummus
1 avocado, sliced
4 green onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons shelled hemp seeds
2 teaspoons za’atar seasoning
1 small bunch of fresh dill
Instructions
- Spread hummus on top of each slice of bread then sprinkle each with 1/2 tablespoon of the hemp seeds.
- Top with sliced avocado and green onion then finish them by adding 1/2 teaspoon of za’atar seasoning and a few pinches of fresh dill. Serve immediately and enjoy!
This looks wonderful! Za’atar is a totally new seasoning to me, but it sounds delicious and super flavorful. I need to look for some in the grocery story.
Ugh those thick avocado slices look peeeerfect!! I’ve been meaning to make avo toasts, and that hummus/za’atar combo sounds perfect! Also, thanks for attentioning me to the Wilson InstaG thing – that gave me a good giggle ;)
yum, what a great lunch or snack!
what kind of bread to typically purchase?
I love Dave’s Killer Bread! You eat it too, right?
I can’t believe summer is so close! I’ve been feeling backwards this year since I’ve been watching my hips get bigger as summer approaches instead of trying to tone up, but I suppose that’ll make me extra motivated to get back in shape when the baby comes :) This avocado toast is my kind of lunch…love the hummus and dill!!
Oh, I’m sure your hips are still teeny tiny! You’re such a petite little thing! :)
Pinned the moment I saw the first picture :) Love this idea, so fresh and totally packing a protein punch with the avo/hemp seeds. Lovely photos!
Oh now this just looks like perfection and I’m betting it tastes even better. Avocado and toast is such an amazing combination, and I have no idea why I never tried it with hummus in the mix. Definitely putting that on the to-do list. And did I tell you I came across Wilson while I was in Hawaii? He was hanging out on a whale watching boat in Maui, so I’d say the little guy has done pretty well for himself!
Haha! Apparently he has done well for himself! That’s too funny. :)
Mmm, I loveee avocado toast! Actually, I’m picking up some avocados today to shoot an avocado recipe myself. Speaking of which, let me know if you’d like to come over and give me some food photography lessons. Your pics are always so gorgeous missy!
LOVE these photos Sarah! They are gorgeous! And yay for avocado toast! I could eat it every day – this version sounds just perfect! I think I’d bring avocado to my desert island too :)
Avocado toast is one of the BEST things ever! I bet it is awesome with hummus added in too!
Hummus and avocado have to be my favourite flavour combination. I’m such a hummus addict and I could eat the two of those things together all day every day! Mmm. I haven’t actually tried them on toast before though, but I’m definitely going to have to now. These sound so yummy – and the photos are stunning! Thank you for sharing :)
Seeeee, I told you I’d come visit you, Sarah! :)
LOVE AVOCADO. I’d also do just fine by myself with some avocado & Wilson on an island. Well, I’d need some books…& I’d need a knife to get me kind of comfortable. This is beautiful, lady! I actually got on that avocado + hummus + toast train last year, but I didn’t put up a recipe for it because it was just avocado, sprouts, & hummus haha. But I love that you added green onions (I did too!), dill, & hemp seeds (I used sesame seeds!). Guess we’re on that same avocado toast train right? So delicious. Za’atar is fairly recent to me as I’ve only used it in cooking once so far, but I loved it!
I’m surprised you didn’t add your own little hummus recipe in addition to the toasts! I mean, yeah buying it from Whole Foods is easier, but I’m sure you make better ;)
Yay! Thank you for visiting me! haha :)
I almost didn’t post it either because it’s so simple but I think some people just like to be inspired with an idea sometimes. So next time, share it! :)
And I know, I need to do better with making my own hummus. It’s just so easy to buy it from WF!
This looks amazing!! Another wonderful recipe!! :) Seriously, you always make the best! Thanks for sharing… I’ll def have to try this!!!
Thanks Cailee! :)
OMG. Whole Foods greek hummus is literally the stuff of dreams. I consider it two servings. Totally adding dill to my toast from here on out! PS these may be my favorite pics of yours EVER. So gosh darn beauteous. Pinning!
Aw, thank you love! And I knew I could count on you to share in my WF’s hummus love. xoxo
I LOVE AVOCADO. I have never heart of za’ater before but this looks amazing.
Thanks, Hayley! It’s a delicious seasoning that’s so versatile. Hopefully you get to try it one day! :)
well, I don’t know, it’s not feeling much like summer right now in NorCal Sarah…at least we’re getting some much needed rain today! The dill and zaatar take this avocado toast to a whole new place of bliss! So gorgeous, I love everything about this recipe (including the chunky avocado wedges). The boys and I make something similar for snack with grilled tortilla… so yum — the toppings change according to whatever I have on hand; fun and diverse. Yes, avocado love… it’s on my ‘almost every day’ list along with olives :). Hugs to Coco.
I know, the weather has been so weird this year! But I’m happy for the rain too, even if it is just a sprinkle. And your grilled tortillas sound amazing! I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Kelly! :)
I LOVE the idea of adding hemp seeds to this…and who doesn’t love avocados??! This is is the perfect snack!

I use za’atar on so many things! From toasts and cheese rolls to chicken and fish dishes. One of my favorite seasonings for hummus is in fact za’atar, so I can’t wait to try your avocado toast, even more so since I’ve never tried hemp seeds!
Thanks Sharon! I think you’ll love hemp seeds. I hope you enjoy the toast! :)

I tried this because I happened to have all the ingredients (including za’atar flavored hummus), even fresh dill which I had randomly picked up on a close-to-expiry discount. Well, I didn’t have spring onion, but I had a bunch of sautéd normal onion in the fridge.
And it was amazing! Wow. The flavours and textures go together really well, blending together but also standing out. Definitely going to make this again.
Thanks Maija! I’m so happy you liked it. :)
